The service primarily targets areas which have poor broadband coverage

Avanti Communications the satellite operator has recently launched a new Pay-As-You-Go service across Europe. It claims to be the first European operator to offer a superfast high-bandwidth Ka-band service with no monthly subscription fees.

The HYLAS1 launched into space back in 2010 will deliver the new superfast service in Europe. Furthermore, Avanti will launch a second satellite, the HYLAS2 on the 2nd of August 2012 which will extend Avanti’s coverage to Africa, Caucasus and the Middle East.

Avanti’s service is primarily targeted at holiday and second-home owners where broadband in these areas are either poor or unserved by traditional broadband networks. Instead of offering fixed-term contracts which typically last for 12-24 months, Avanti offers a rolling, data based contract. The satellite connection offers download speeds of 4Mbps and upload speeds of 1Mbps, with data top ups of 1GB upwards.

The global marketing director of Avanti, Christian Georgeson says,

“This is a major breakthrough for providers of Internet services and has the ability to transform the satellite broadband market cross the Europe. Our Pay-As-You-Go pricing model will allow Avanti’s partners to target customers whom may have previously not considered satellite broadband services as a viable option, therefore providing the perfect complement to contract offers.”

Since 2010, BT has been using HYLAS1 in its £132 million campaign to get its broadband service to the remotest part of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
